wingspan : 6.3 - 7.5 cm (females larger than males)
male/ : red background with black bands on forewings
female characteristic eye spots on all wings
larval foodplant: Common nettle, small nettle
Hop
A spectacularly coloured butterfly. It is so common nowadays that one tends not to appreciate it. Thay often form large clouds around the Buddleias or on dead vegetation on sunny ride edges. Sightings were down considerably in the poor summer of 2007.
