                                           Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
 
         
 
 
 
                                 wingspan : 5.4 - 5.8 cm;
                                 male/        : Pale, pinkish-brown with black spots, plus white spots on forewings.
                                 female        Underside marbled pale and mid-brown with a row of blue eye-like
                                                    spots on hindwings.

                                foodplant:  thistles, nettles
 
                                
 
We only get very occasional sightings of this butterfly. It seems to like sunny areas with thistles growing amongst tall grasses.
