We keep a small stock of potted hazel for planting-up of gaps and for sale.

Hazel will grow in most normal garden soils, with a pH of between 4.5 and 7. Hazel does not like an acid soil.

 

Hazel is not suitable for hedges: being deciduous and "gappy" it does not form a good security barrier and growth will be unsuitable for practical use.

 

Hazel will grow best in a sheltered, sunny position with no overhead shade. Planting should be done in a block to maximise side-shade and so discourage branching and forking.

 

Anyone suffering from asthma should note that vast quantities of fine pollen are produced in the late winter/early spring.
