                                 wingspan : 4.4 - 4.8 cm;
                                 male/        : Bright orange-brown with
                                 female        dark-brown spots and edges
                                                    White "comma" on
                                                    hindwings.
                                                                                               
                                larval
                                foodplant:  nettles. elm.
 
                                
 
 
 
I very rarely see this butterfly. Strange really with all the nettles on the site. I have even planted a few Elms. In previous years the white "comma" has been visible on the upper hind-wng, but not on this specimen.
 
A very warm Sunday morning, March 14th 2009 is the earliest sighting that I have ever had of a Comma.
